That’s a wrap on “The Executioners”

So to wrap up a pretty exciting 2016 why not fly down to Florida and film a crazy movie called “The Executioners”. Let me rewind a little bit. So I was in St. Louis and I received a phone call from my friend Allan. Allan is a producer who will help produce my very first short film called “No Charge.” We’ve always kept in contact ever since that first project and he always said if he has a project I’m gonna be the first one to call, so he called me. He told me he had this awesome script that he was trying to shoot it and he needed an AD and the rest was history.

img_7932Any way so I fly down to sunny Florida leaving freezing North Carolina and get picked up in a convertible to welcome me back to Florida. The production for this project was pretty interesting to say the least. I originally suggested that we shoot this project and 20 days. The final schedule ended being 14 days but we finished in 16 days. This project wasn’t the easiest to get through but I excepted the challenge and we got to the end of the project and finished the movie. This movie will probably be one of the best movies that I’ve ever been 1st Assistant Director for. It pushes the limits it makes you very uncomfortable but I think in making controversial films like this one will stand out and be really good at the end of the day.

“Suicide For Beginners” Official Trailer

I’m back again with another update. This update came a little unexpected but happy that it is here. Working the independent film market, you tend to have wild stories because every situation is so different but also awesome because what I do really isn’t of the norm. But this film “Suicide For Beginners” formerly “Love Letter” has tons of stories but I’ll leave that to my book I just thought of writing when I retire and move to Costa Rica.

We shoot this lovely and odd but entertaining film back in 2013, in Wilmington, NC and it finally came too light in the form of a movie trailer and hopefully you all and myself get to see this film directed by Craig Thieman.

Special shout out to the cast and crew of this film. I made a couple of good friends from this shoot. It was shoot very close to my childhood home Jacksonville, NC and my mom got a chance to come to set a couple of days and see what I do for a living and she blessed the crew with some homemade cakes that they destroyed in world record time! LOL

Be blessed and #MakeMovies!

That’s a wrap on “Blood on Wheels”

So about a month ago (July) I got a call from Frederick (AD out of LA) and asked if I had a few weeks free in my calendar and I said yeah. He was booked and he got me in contact with one of his crews that he works with out of LA that was shooting a movie in Hamilton, OH. “I was like cool, let’s do it!”

The team I end up meeting in Ohio was Dark Rabbit Productions. This group is a good group of people and they shoot a ton of movies! Matter of fact they wrapped another shoot right before we started our project.

Melanie (Director), Eitan (DP) & Douglas (1st AD)

My director for this project was Melanie Aitkenhead. A USC grad and was really a joy to work with. Her energy was contagious to be around. As long as she was shooting, she was happy. And we shot a lot. This was my first feature where we shot with 2 cameras. We had 2 days that we had to cover 12 pages and those were some of our easier days. Another first for me were the fight scenes. But we had 2 good stunt coordinators that helped us get through those scenes.  Continue reading

There are “No Good Heroes” in St. Louis

me and johnSo a couple of weeks ago I wrapped another feature project in St. Louis called “No Good Heroes”. John Xeno directed the
film. I met John on the set of “Grandmother’s Murder Club”. One of the producers Brian Jun thought I was doing a great job on the project and he was one of the EP’s on “No Good Heroes” and he thought I would be a good fit for John and his project. I am extremely thankful for that. That made me feel like I was doing a great job. Side note: a lot of time as an AD, no one really tells you; you are doing a good or great job. You just hear when something is messed up.

A little bit about the film: After living peacefully in the caverns of a small town, a stranded group of aliens turn deadly as they fight for their existence, betraying the compassionate chief of police who has protected them for 28 years.

This was a really fun and ambitious project. There were a lot of things fredthat could have been crazy during this production but I was able to bring a great 2nd AD (Frederick Gourgue) on the project. I met Fred at the top of the year with the “Everything But a Man” film I did in LA. And after that project I told him that I would try my best to get him on every project I could. He is really great at what he does. We had a lot of different elements on this project that I couldn’t not handle by myself during the production, that was just completely impossible to do with a green 2nd AD. Thanks Fred and my 2nd 2nd AD Katie Keppel.

And we did finish the project. We had a couple of pick up days because one of our main talent got sick during the production but I have a lot of faith in this project and I know its going to be good. John and the crew did a lot of hard work on this project and all that hard work will be seen when the movie is premiered and I can’t wait!

Oh and another exciting thing happened while I was out there in St. Louis. I snapped a picture of the arch and was contacted by the good people at the St. Louis Magazine asking can they use one of my pictures for the magazine. I thought it was pretty cool. This is my first photo ever published. So that makes me a published photographer and that is pretty awesome. Check out STLMag.com

Grandmother’s Murder Club – That’s a wrap!

11698633_1685039628374770_872092503190912225_nSo if you read my last blog, you saw that I just completed my 10th feature film as an Assistant Director. Well that film was called “Grandmothers Murder Club”. I flew in to the wonderful city of St. Louis, MO and shot a really cool movie.

Grandmothers Murder Club is a Dark Action Comedy about four Grandmother’s accidently killing a con man and, to cover it up, they have to get rid of the body. When his partner shows up, things go south. The film starred Florence Henderson (Brady Bunch), Pam Grier (Jackie Brown), Judge Reinhold (Beverly Hills Cop), and Randall Batinkoff (School Ties) along with a great supporting cast.

I’ve worked in the Missouri before and I had a hunch that these new group of people I would be working with would be great to11753679_1683744221837644_1839090057976632025_n work with. And my hunch was right. Making movies is always so much better to do when you have good people with great attitudes around you. Srikant Chellappa (Director) was great to work with. His attitude and humor was great to have on set everyday. He told me he waited 10 years to do this film because he felt he needed to work his way up to directing a feature. I think it was a good strategy because we knocked this film out of the park. Our actors and actresses, AMAZING! Our producers picked an amazing set of actors and  they were a joy to work with.

I really can’t wait for you all to see it. The goal for this film is to get it in movie theaters. The producing team behind this project is great and I am sure they will do their best to make that happen. Thanks to Srikant, Dan, Kevin and Brian for bringing me aboard this wonderful project! I look forward to working with you guys again.

Oh by the way, Big Body Denzel, my acting alter ego makes another feature film appearance in this movie! Sri was like “Doug, I need someone else working in the grocery store scene” so when you see me in this movie with a  blue apron on “Hank the grocery stocker” its really Big Body Denzel! =) LOL
